Midlife Metamorphosis

 In Blog

I’m in the midst of a midlife meltdown. Since 2021, a camera has captured this turbulent time while I’ve wondered why the heck I signed up to be the subject of a damn documentary!

Life has taken some sudden and shocking turns, and what I thought was solid ground continues to morph in messy unpredictable ways while the perfectionistic/people-pleasing parts of myself watch wide-eyed in panic.

Our shared stories of love, loss, grief, succeeding, screwing up, death and rebirth, hit every human at different ages and stages, and occasionally knock us to our knees. Midlife just happens to be a time when these soul storms bring about big Change.

For months, I’ve been using the metaphor of metamorphosis: feeling like I’m caught in a dense cocoon during that uncomfortable, insecure incubation stage once the caterpillar has left the safety of the garden and suddenly is confined inside a chrysalis, covered in goo, with bumps growing on its body and unable to see beyond its limited barriers…

Last week, I visited the butterfly vivarium at the American Natural History Museum in NYC, and was deeply moved by the BEAUTY that eventually emerges from the goo.

I learned it’s the “struggle” inside the cocoon that builds the strength of the wings.

Recently, my friend and talented photographer, Jonathan Pozniak, met me in Palm Springs. As we played in the pool, something started to take shape from the watery depths – a magical metamorphosis, this time caught by his camera.

Perhaps the best way to cultivate comfort during tough transitions is to remember that wonderful positive Change is always possible.

Love you Adele. 💝 To me, you are the definition of a Goddess. Showing your vulnerability here is so powerful and inspiring and a reminder that we are all human. Thank you for sharing this so authentically. It’s nice to see in such a filtered, curated world. With that said, I am SO looking forward to watching the documentary you’ve been working on 🥹 PS. Love your Methamorphosis metaphor and video. SO creative! Must have been fun filming 🤗

Even the chrysalis is awe inspiringly beautiful. Wings have their place but so does the womb. Thats where creation begins…..surrendering to the journey is signing up for the adventure!! I think your written words are exquisite. Love you!

For me, often creativity and happiness go hand in hand – at least when I’m in the ‘FLOW and let go’ side of art 😉

I’m right there with you, Adele. Your words leave me wanting more. For me, such a big part of making it through the storms is to surrender, to make friends with things being messy, knowing there’s always some sort of delicious surprise waiting to be uncovered. And I’m learning as I approach 50 to embrace that archetypal Enchantress within who doesn’t need to figure it all out, just savors the mystery. Keep it coming, sister. We need more voices like yours!

The documentary is in the works! I’ve learned these types of films take a looong time. Thankfully the older I get, the more patient I become with life’s process. But believe me, I’m ready for this baby to be born too!! 😉 Hope it will be worth the wait!
